HMR 2024

The Hellenic Mountain Race is a fixed route, unsupported, single-stage cycling race through the mountains of Greece. The clock does not stop and there are no prizes. It follows a mix of gravel roads, stone pathways and tarmac. It will offer to those who take part another image of this country. We will travel far from the beaches and islands that most visitors are aware of. We will head to the north and west: to the steep, forested slopes of the Pindus Mountains. You will be surprised by how wild and remote this part of the world is. What you will recognize of Greece though, is the warmth of its people and the taste of the food. There is some hike a bike, and at times there is great distances between resupply points. We hope that the views and character of the special places that we want to share with you will make up for the effort it will take to get there.

The race starts at 9:00AM on the 25th of May 2024, with a ‘grand départ’ from the famous perched monasteries of Meteora. Riders will follow an 883 kilometre fixed route that passes through three staffed control points. They will need to get a stamp in their brevet card at each, before finally heading to the finish line in the picturesque fortified town of Nafpaktos on the Corinthian Gulf, for a well deserved post-race beer or two. To earn a successful finish they will need to complete the course before the end of the after party at midnight on the 1st of June.

How tough it will be cannot be understated, but as Mike Hall once said, “Nothing that’s worth anything is ever easy.” This race will be a true demonstration of this sentiment.
